Thunder Myst Kennels - Steve and Betsy (Kaiser) Bernock Overview
Location: Fenton, Michigan
How often do we offer training?
Year-round individual instruction, group field classes in the spring and puppy
field
classes in the fall
Would we travel to offer seminars?
Absolutely! Together with 3 other training partners, we comprise All
Level Retriever
Training Associates. The 5 of us run AKC and UKC hunt tests and all 5 of
us are
AKC hunt test judges.
Experience with Golden Retrievers:
My family raised Goldens for 20 years, and I trained, showed and ran field
events
with our Goldens. My husband and I currently raise Labradors.
Do we provide instruction on WC, WCX and JH trial preparation?
Yes, in addition to SH and MH level preparation.
Training issues specific to working with Goldens: Understand
each individual
dog's attitude, temperament and trainability before establishing a training
program. We do not have one training program to which we expect every
dog to
adapt. Instead, we evaluate each dog and adapt a suitable training
program
for the dog based on trainability, attitude, temperament, and goals of the
owner.
Training philosophy: Covered in above.
When is an e-collar appropriate?
We use e-collars for training our advanced dogs that will run at the Master
level.
WC, WCX and JH work can be accomplished without the use of an e-collar.
Master level work can also be accomplished without the use of a collar; it is
a
long, time consuming and tedious road that the owner / trainer needs to be
aware
of and commits to using if that is the preferred method by the owner.
What else can I add? In addition to hosting seminars, training
classes and
individual training, we also take in client dogs that stay with us during
training. We show our dogs and client dogs in the conformation
ring. We
own an obedience training center in our area (Westland, Michigan).
